FREQUENT ACCIDENTS SPARKED THEM INTO ACTION!

Painting the railway stop was the first step of the many “steps that make a difference and an attitude that stands from the crowd”. This educational and promotional project “An Octopus With an Attitude” by safety.GURU Institute promotes safe and healthy traffic practices. It is primarily aimed at students of the Borongaj Campus and primary school pupils who cross the railway every day on their way to school. HŽ Infrastruktura (Croatian Railways) supported the painting of the stop.

EDUCATIONAL TRAIL CALLS FOR SAFE RAILWAY CROSSING

The Institute for the Promotion of Culture and Traffic Safety, safety.GURU Institute, could no longer stand idly by and watch the frequent accidents near the Trnava railway crossing, so they decided to do something.
After the first step, which was to paint the Trnava stop in Dubrava, and the second, where a fun workshop was created on the path between the railway crossing and Resnik, this week they built an Educational Trail towards the Borongaj campus.

ILCAD

On June 9, 2022, Croatian Railways marked the 14th International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) at the Trnava level crossing in Zagreb.

Every year, the global ILCAD campaign targets a specific audience. This year, the focus was on reaching a “vulnerable group of people” and warning them about the dangers of crossing or lingering near the railways in an illegal or careless way.

This event was organized in cooperation with the local police station and the non-profit organization safety.guru INSTITUTE as part of the preventive and educational project “Octopus With an Attitude – Steps that make a difference”, which addresses the dangers of trespassing on the railway tracks.

HUNDREDS OF PARTICIPANTS ATTENDED THE SYMPOSIUM AT THE POLYTECHNIC “HRVATSKO ZAGORJE”

“The economic system requires constant improvement, rationalization, creativity and innovation, which has been particularly important recently. Scientific research will be the backbone of the Polytechnic in the coming period because it is no longer enough to merely keep up with technological and business development. You must develop knowledge, skills, competencies and competitiveness in new technologies–not by following what others have created, but by actively participating in its development. That is your future, students,” emphasizes Dean Sikirica.

INITIATIVE TO PRESERVE THE CLEANLINESS OF THE PIONIRAC PARK

Like many parks, Grad mladih / Pionirac is polluted by cigarette butts discarded by careless smokers. Those people could now choose to wait before polluting the environment if they decide to participate in the initiative “Because Butty Protects the Park”, which introduces a brilliant way of solving this problem. Instead of the cigarette butts ending up on the floor, they can be disposed of in one of Butty’s wise heads (large transparent ashtrays) which are placed in visible and accessible spots.

A PLAY FOR ALL GENERATIONS – “OCAT I SIN” CELEBRATES ITS 100TH PERFORMANCE

Along with the play, the audience will also be introduced to the project “Octopus with an Attitude”, which raises awareness and educates about the dangers of the mobile phone use in traffic. Modern life is unimaginable without the ubiquitous presence of mobile phones and their ever-growing array of applications. In addition to the positive effects that mobile phones bring, there are also a number of negative consequences. According to the statistics, mobile phones are the third killer in traffic in the Republic of Croatia. 90% of drivers, 50% of pedestrians and 33% of cyclists use mobile phones in traffic. In combination with headphones, mobile phones distract traffic participants, which results in an increased number of injured and fatal accidents, especially among young people.

GLOBAL ROAD SAFETY WEEK AND THE CAMPAIGN “IS ANYONE AWAKE? CHOOSE LIFE”

As part of the fifth Global Road Safety Week, the Institute for the Promotion of Culture and Traffic Safety held a preventive campaign “Is anyone Awake? Choose Life” at the illegal railway crossing along the Vrapčak stream today. Trespassing on the railway at the Oranice – Vrapčak crossing is an everyday occurrence for pedestrians and cyclists who live in the area. However, given the number of trains passing through on the daily basis, this behavior resembles a game of Russian roulette.

According to spokesperson Marela Sopta, the Institute for the Promotion of Culture and Traffic Safety did not choose this illegal crossing by the Vrapčak stream by chance. At that spot, an average of one person crosses the tracks every 20 seconds, while a train passes on average every 3 minutes. What is even more devastating is the fact that pedestrians use mobile phones and headphones at the crossing in 13% of cases and in 10% of cases, they also carry bicycles.

The State Secretary of the Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure, Nikolina Brnjac, spoke about the crossing and the Global Road Safety Week during the preventive activity.

“Safety is the most important factor in traffic. A single moment of inattention can lead to catastrophic consequences, and that is why, during the Global Road Safety Week, we must support initiatives that educate people who live along the railway. This mainly concerns children, who should learn about safety both from their parents and at school.”

The issue of trespassing along the Vrapčak stream has once again been brought to public attention, with a concrete solution still pending. Leaflets, warnings and advice will have a limited impact if pedestrians and cyclists do not understand that the train is always faster and therefore always dangerous, not through the fault of the train driver or any third party on the railway. Inattention and delayed reactions simply do not pay off.
